NARRATIVE: These reports will serve as ongoing updates on the progress of the Deep Centaurus Expedition, undertaken by USS Copernicus NCC-623-B, CAPT Jadrys Itana commanding, under the authority of RADM Quistra, 103rd Expeditionary Task Force. The scope of this expedition will take the Copernicus through coreward stars in the constellation Centaurus with the goals of charting, exploration and increasing knowledge of an unexplored region of space beyond the "northeastern" borders of the Federation.

After passing through space previously explored by the 103rd ETF, the Copernicus entered the first targeted system, 337 G. Centauri. This star system has been known for some time to be a single-star system comprised of a blue-white A-type dwarf star of approximately 1.87 solar masses.

Our survey of the system confirmed observations from Starbase 91 of significant gaseous matter, consistent with a young star system, and a single Saturn-type gas giant in the outer system. However, further exploration revealed an additional non-gaseous planet in the outer system (337 G. Centauri II). Analysis shows a metal and ice-heavy planet of approximately 0.67 standard Earth diameters with significant deposits of rare minerals present beneath the ice sheets.

Curiously, our orbital scans detected traces of energy signatures and refined alloys. An away team led by LCDR Fox was dispatched to investigate. A search of the vicinity revealed the remains of an open surface mining operation, which is estimated to have been abandoned for anywhere between seven to 12 years based on sensor data. The away team documented a very large circular shaft penetrating at least 147 kilometres into the planetary bulk as well as numerous supporting structures in various stages of repair.

LCDR Fox and her team were able to gain access to one of the structures, which appeared to be a central control hub, and documented numerous computerized systems. The team were unable to restore power to the facility and discovered that no functioning reactors remained present. A supplemental engineering team led by LT Huynh confirmed infrastructure that would once have supported four reactors of unknown configuration. An attempt was made to download the database of the facility's central computer, resulting in a partial dump, which the universal translator has been unsuccessful in deciphering. However, readings suggest the facility was constructed to extract tantalum from the planetoid, an element which further sensor analysis revealed to be unnaturally abundant.

During the course of the investigation, members of the engineering team analyzing the reactor housings began to experience symptoms of paranoia and elevated anxiety. Further analysis revealed numerous subspace fractures in these areas of the facility, apparently originating from the reactor housings, arranged in such a way as to cause sensory pressure akin to infrasound when a sentient being passed through the space they occupied. The team was ordered to steer clear of these areas, and analysis was undertaken via exocomp and remote sensor platforms.

Based on these surveys, we estimate a technological level comparable to the Federation and a power source based on some form of manipulation of subspace energy. We do not have sufficient data to identify the builders of the facility, but the designs observed do not correspond to any known political entity in the broader region.

RECOMMENDATION: No action - information only.
